Pewatronic Master Chess Computer

Post by Bryan Whitby »

Link to a thread about the new Pewatronic Master Chess Computer based on the Saitek Master Chess.
Looks like a really good chess computer for the price.

A good computer? Yes!
For the price (ca. 1.000,- Euro)? No!

Sorry, please do not forget: Inside is the same software like it is in a Mephisto Milano Pro ...

Yes, it is wood, it is handcrafted, it is well done ...

But: For the same money I can buy a Mephisto Vancouver 32 Bit with an Exclusive Board ... or a Magellan with Munich Board or many other fine things ...

So, yes, a nice machine but I would not buy it ...

Regards,
Sascha

Who releases these things ..do you know?
is it a real company or some guy working out of his basement?
i think i saw one of these about 2 years ago on Ebay
it was a souped up /tuned/modified Explorer Pro ..IIRC
Ruud has received certain permissions from Saitek to release his modules
are these computers authorized by Saitek(the Successor to Mephisto) in any way?

Inquisitive Regards
Steve

i know some folks enjoy these sorts of contraptions and that is fine

Well Steve,
as I told before ... it looks nice but I would never buy it ...

There are sooooo many other nice computers which are waiting for me ...

By the way: I think I have your old Fidelity Premiere ... is it possible? It is like new ... the guy who sold it to me, told me, that it was in your collection ...

Curious Regards,
Sascha

I dont recall ever selling /trading an Elite Premiere
i do remember someone once contacting me and complaining that a photo i posted on my site of my Premiere was very similar in looks to his Premiere
he did some sort of analysis of the Grains of the wood of my photo and his Premiere
he seemed all excited about this so i simply removed the photo and posted another photo My Premiere and he seemed satisfied and went away
anyway the important thing is
Congrats To your Premiere
a very beautiful computer!

Well Done Regards

Exquisite!
Use it in good health

i am waiting for a V5
there were two Ebay auctions for a V5 recently
the first seller would not ship to me and i was not allowed to bid
two days later another V5 surfaced and here i was allowed to bid
Hopefully it will arrive in good shape with no Reed problems

Steve,
I saw both V5 auctions ... the first one in the swiss was a really nice one ... but same problem for me: The way to pick it up was too long for me ...I saw no chance within the next few weeks to drive around 1.800 Kilometer within one day ...

The second one was direct in Paris, I know. Sadly I saw that it has some lightshades on the fields ... therefore I think, 1.800,- Euro was a little too much for me ...

Nevertheless: My congrats to you!!!

With best wishful Regards,
Sascha

Thanks Sascha
for me ..some light spots is no issue as i do not intend to sell the computer in the future
however my wife might have different ideas.. minutes if not seconds after i am declared dead by my doctor
hopefully she can exercise enough restraint to not start selling them at my funeral
:P

the first V5 went to a top collector form Germany so i imagine he is probably on his way back now from a 4 day round trip driving journey to Switzerland

Road Trip Regards

Hi Steve,
yes I saw that the first one is gone to K. B. ... in my opinion that is sad, because he never uses them and he does not play on tournaments with it ... so it is a pity for the community.

But I had to decide what to buy: The Premiere and the Tasc TM Machine (and board) or the V5 and drive to the Switzerland ... but I think, I made the right choice ... for me. :D

And for "your" case ... please give my e-Mail address to your wife ... just for the case ...

Hope for a long life Regards,
Sascha

NO Question that if i were searching for those three computers and the choice was Tasc+Premier Vs V5 then i would make the same choice as you did
its a no brainer

the V5 along with the V8 and V10 have been on my search lists for so long now that i began charging them rent a few years ago
:o

while we are on the subject of searching for old chess computers..
it amazes me how i still cannot find a London 68000 module
this is not even a rare module and yet i cannot get my hands on one
i have all of the other Lang London versions ( 020, 030 ,TM 36 Mhz and the Berlin Pro London) but not the London 68k
someone offered to send me the eprom for it but then i have to use it in an existing Mephisto module which closes one hole in my collection only to open up another hole
i hate doing that
i did that once long ago when i traded away a Prestige V5
it was upgraded to a V5 at the Fidelity Factory
i traded it for some rare Conchess modules all of which i could have acquired elsewhere years later
a stupid decision i have regretted every day
now at least i can cross the V5 off my list

Werewolf Of London Regards
Steve

Talking of Conchess
When I produced my computer chess magazine all those years ago, the owner of Conchess rang me up one night complaining about the ratings I was publishing from the Swedish magazine 'Ply'.
At that time the Swedish ratings where the only independent ones available and where a valuable source of information to us who had chess computers.
The Conchess MD threatened me that should I ever publish anything that might hinder the sales of his chess computers, he would come down on me like a 'like a ton of bricks'. Then the cheeky bugger sent me an advert to include in the next issue of my mag a few days later!!
Who You Looking At Regards
Bryan
