Rybka matescore
Hello everybody, this is my first post, so let me introduce myself: I am Hans van der Zijden and I am the Rybka operator. I made a picture of the Rybka mate in 1942 moves, as you can see on this site, but there is some misunderstanding about it. It baffled me also at first site, but after every move the score went up by 2. Then I realised it must have something to do with the plydepth. I assume that the mate score is 2000 and the number of plies away from mate is subtracted from that. So in the picture it is I think a mate in (2000-1942)/2=29 moves. Obviously coming from tablebases.
Ty Harvey for your newsservice.
If it wasnt for the newsfeed that you and the other "privateers" and participants do, we wouldnt know anything about the tournament because the official icga information policy is... err... is there any??
Also i am happy to see that you guys are havin a good time, despite the many problems and shortcomings in the organisation of this event.
Making a computer games (!!!!) tournament without stable internetconnection is... already bad. Making it without even the slightest preparation so that you (harvey) have to use your private macbook as router so that peeps can play... well.... is.... just another example of total failure of the icga organisation comitee (if there is/ was any, really).
I think the question is what the heck Levy and the other "Mister wannabe important" have been doing except smiling into the camera... because they certainly did NOT do a proper job of organizing and setting up a great tournament.
Cheers

Diary day 2
Monday 29:
The previous evening we held a playermeeting, in which it was decided to try to play in the hotel. Harvey would try to make his Mac function as a wireless router. When it seemed not to work, I decided to go back to my room. Next day I got into the bus and 1 minute before departure someone asked me if I shouldn't be playing in the hotel. Apparantly Harvey made it work after all and nobody told me. The things they try to prevent Rybka from winning the tournament. There was a beautiful room available where 10 programs had more than enough room. And more important; not one internetcrash in 2 rounds. And a beautiful view at the lake and smog. In the lunchbreak I ordered a fruitsalad. It consisted of 2 types of melon and some tomato's. There are some strange things going on with the food. They don't know bread, but for us europeans they made
something looking like bread. Too bad it all tastes sweet. At breakfast the
orange and pineapplejuice are hot. If you order a juice in the hotel you get a whole liter. It took some days before the beer was finally cold enough to the taste of a foreigner. Stefan (Shredder) and I ordered a coke and got 1½ liter both. And I expect to encounter some more funny things the next days. Now that we played in the hotel, I finally had the time to visit the masseuse. It was a sort of chinese torture, but the doctor says I am able to play tomorrow.

Never do something today, that someone else can do tomorrow. (Confusedius)
I'm sure this has been discussed at length before, but (aside from obvious things like the phone) why don't they give every program the same hardware - or at least an upper limit on the spec. With some programs running on dual core, and others on 40 - the results are somewhat meaningless!!
(Though I'm still cheering for Hiarcs!)

I don't believe in intuition, but I've got a funny feeling that one day I will...
Rybka's hardware
The rumors are true. Rybka is running on 5 8 core computers:Soren Riis wrote:Thanks for the nice coverage, and congratulations with with Hiarcs results. Like last year it looks like Hiarcs will do very well and must be among the favorites to give Rybka a run for her life. Not easy if Rybka like rumored is running on 40 cores!

a 4.2 GHz Skulltrail
a 3.4 GHz 2x Xeon X5460
a 3.0 GHz 2x Xeon E5430
a 3.0 GHz 2x Xeon X5365 - using the mainboard and memory modules of that computer that won WCCC 2007 in Amsterdam

Some more pictures from the WCCC at China
Hey folks,
this time we have a look into the Chinese culture.
This first picture is gonna show you Harvey's new favourite Chinese meal, from the Hotel menu, (of course this is only a rumour). It's called fried Ox penis....
Now something about German card games. Here the crowd is playing the Chinese card game "Bang" in a pub. Harvey won the first round, without knowing any further rules he told me.
Oh and before I forget. It seems that now even at the WCCC knight odds are well known. Hans here is giving the mobile phone knight odds while waiting for Jonny's next move in Rybka's game from round 4.
Hope you like the visual coverage. More to come, I assume.
Regards,
Sebi

thats their function. its not their function to organise anything.
sad IMO, but this is how it works.
the participants pay the fee, the board gets financed and can represent
themselves
the winner gets a title so the winner can make better business.
thats the rules of the game.
What seems like a fairy tale today may be reality tomorrow.
Here we have a fairy tale of the day after tomorrow....
