2024 Special: Below 1925 online tournament

Post by paulwise3 »

Hi all,

Here is a try to start a new online tournament, it is a long time after the last Below 1850 tournament played in 2021.
I hope everybody is still alive. My thoughts go to Al (Scally).
So we play again on the Lichess.org platform.

We use the active (Celo) eloratings from the wiki-elo-liste, which can be found at https://www.schach-computer.info/wiki/i ... -Elo-Liste and https://www.schachcomputer.info/html/ak ... liste.html. Clones are also allowed of course, see also https://www.schach-computer.info/wiki/i ... itle=Klone.

I take the privilege of choosing first, and enter the Fidelity Chesster Challenger. But have no fear, I played already 2 tournaments with it without success. It seems me and the Fidelity's are no good match ;-).

We will see how many participants play with us. Depending on that we can choose between a full competition or a Swiss tournament with a fixed number of rounds.
We play at level Game in 30 minutes, unless a computer does not have that level. Then both computers should play at level 30 seconds per move (average or fixed).

In the Below 1850 thread there were already a few entries:

Phil (kalatov) - Novag Super Nova
Thorsten (mclane) - Mephisto MM II 7.4 MHz (or Mephisto Monte Carlo)
Eric (Tibono2) - Novag Constellation Expert
Paul (paulwise3) - Fidelity Chesster Challenger
...

Who follows?

Best regards,
Paul

I'm interested in participating. Just need to decide on what I could bring to the tournament. There's already two Novag's so a Super Expert A seems too much. Fidelity Par Excellence is too close to the Chesster. Ummm...

Hi Eric,
feel free about your Super Expert A; as these three Novag computers would be spread timewise, if I am correct: 1985 (Const. Expert), 1987 (Super Expert), 1990 (Super Nova). I guess they show some differences in the way they play...
And Paul wrote your Super Expert A might be the favorite; that's a challenge to be taken up
Cheers,
Eric

Hi Eric,

I have no problem with both your possibilities, simply choose which one you like to play with, as long as it is not a clone-program of one of the other participants.

NB: I just sent a PM to a number of participants of our last tournament, hopefully there will be a reaction soon!

Regards, Paul

Okay, I'll throw the Novag Super Expert A into the ring and see how it does.

Thanks!

Hello Paul & the other chess computer friends,

I have only just read this post. And I very much welcome Paul's initiative to call for an online tournament.

I will participate with the Tiger Grenadier.

Greetings Franz

Hi Laurent,

Welcome! One game game a week is good enough, less could be a problem. And indeed it is up to the players to determine what time and day.

Best regards,
Paul

Yes, 8 participants is a nice number to start with. I will make a full competition scheme, and publish it within short time.
Except for the Mephisto MM II all chess computers have the level game in 30 minutes. So all games will be played at that level, except against the MM II we have to play at level 30 secs/move.

NB: Most of the time my best playing day is monday evening.

Best regards,
Paul

Hi,
thanks Paul!

Need to point out: the Novag Constellation Expert features no "game in" level. I double checked the user manual, best I found is level 3 = 60 moves per 30 minutes (so 30s avg).
Warm regards,
Eric

Trying to sum up registrations :
Hi Laurent,

The ratings you supply are not the actual ratings according to the active elo ratings 2023. And Thorsten's MM II is tuned from 3.7 to 7.4 MHz.
Here are the correct ones.
  • Person | Computer | Programmer | Aktiv ELO
  • Phil (kalatov) | Novag Super Nova | David Kittinger | 1886
  • Thorsten (mclane) | Mephisto MM II 7.4 MHz | Ulf Rathsman | 1897
  • Eric (Tibono2) | Novag Constellation Expert | David Kittinger | 1890
  • Paul (paulwise3) | Fidelity Chesster Challenger | D&K Spracklen | 1904
  • Eric (esinger) | Novag Super Expert A | David Kittinger | 1919
  • Franz (ferribaci) | Tiger Grenadier | Christian Donninger | 1881
  • Jarek (jarek) | Excalibur Igor (711E) | Ron Nelson | 1838
  • Laurent (oriental) | SciSys Turbo King II | Julio Kaplan / Craig Barnes | 1891
@ Eric (Tibono): You are right, the Constellation Expert does not have the game in 30 minutes level, so it's games should also be played at the 30 secs/move level.

@All participants: I wait another 2 days, maybe some more participants could come.

Best regards,
Paul
