New Mephisto Phoenix chess computer

I got an update from Millennium, and unfortunately they did not include the Mephisto Phoenix on the 20% discount, which i think is just fair to early adopters of the system.

Well, it does say the discount is on all deliverables so it could/should apply. This does seem to be unfair when the previous discount for early adopters was less.

No good for me anyway as they don't deliver to the UK, but this is probably a blessing in disguise to save my bank account

After reading the instruction manual online at Chess House (USA), it looks like one has to pay extra for the emulations package. Is that true?

To be more precise, the manual says "In the “PLAY RETRO CHESS” mode you will find emulations of old chess computers against which you can play at
different speeds. This mode is optional in the Mephisto Phoenix, if you have not yet activated the emulation
package for your device, you can do so at any time via the webshop on www.computerchess.com ."

I'm just wondering if the emus have to be activated, or if they have to be purchased. Thank you.

Mythbuster reported that work is underway to implement a paid add-on in the form of three engines: Ginkgo, Dragon 3 and Leela.

In addition, those purchasing Phoenix will get 5-Steiner tablebases as part of the free update. This sounds really promising and I must admit that I am excited

To answer my own question about the emulations: Raphael at ChessHouse says:

They are included with the product with no activation needed! That's one of the aspects adding significant value to the Phoenix.

However because we are no longer in the European Union I have already been charged £156.60 ‘duties, taxes & fees’ by FedEx

We’ve also had several British Mail postal strikes which have severely slowed down parcels and letter deliveries, I haven’t seen a postman for over 2 weeks

Ouch! That's one thing that puts me off ordering. Despite really liking my Millennium chess computers especially TheKing Element, I've had several issues with the boards and elements and have had to return several times. Customer service from Millennium has been exemplary but I've been stung a couple of times since UK leaving the EU with import fees. 25% of the new value despite being a warranty replacement is not nice!

Anyway, I hope you will be very happy with the new Phoenix, it's certainly a nice looking machine!
