Chessnut Air Store

Post by Bryan Whitby »

Chessnut have now opened their online store with their first board the Chessnut Air.
Retailing at £167, it's a good price for this excellent small eboard.

According to Tobias (@Hilinder) & Ed (@ednekebno), this is the only battery powered e-board that allows play with the chess.com computer bots online.

Does anyone have a video demonstrating how to make this work? Is this accomplished through the Chessnut app, the Chess.com app, or WhitePawn app?

It appears this board is receiving great support from mobile developers such as @aartbik (Chess for Android) & @programmierbär (BearChess), along with Whitepawn as mentioned above.

Do any current owners of this board have any additional comments regarding the performance? Does it have the ability to connect with iOS HIARCS?

You can use it in Arena, CB-Emu (Arena), ChessBase, Fritz, LucasChess and Shredder too using my driver (USB and BluetoothLE).

Hi Greg

I play against the Sargon and Maia engines on Lichess which is very easy to connect to.

Here is my video how to do it.

Hi Greg,

here is just a short video "quick and dirty" to show you how it works.

bots in chess.com

one remark:
you can also play the bots with the Certabo-Boards. But only in Windows or MacOS, not with a smartphone. And no, Hiarcs works not wit the Chessnut Air.

Hi Bryan & Tobias,

Thank you so much for sharing these videos! I apologize for the late reply - I was traveling quite often for work during the 4Q last year and lost sight of this thread.

I do play the Maia Bots using my Millennium eONE and it works quite well. Glad to see the Chessnut Air is also able to do this. Unfortunately the eONE still does not allow play against the Chess.com bots, so I still have my eye on the Chessnut (it is on sale for $179 this week).

Are you both still happy with your boards? I follow the Chessnut Backers Group on Facebook and there seems to be mixed experiences with performance and customer support.

Does anyone else have experience with this board?

Hi Greg

Unfortunately I don't play with mine now as I can't get use to the LEDs being behind the pieces.

The worst piece was the chunky knight for obscuring the LED which I managed to change and then repainted the yellowish white pieces to a more creamy colour. I then recoloured the black pieces to a darker brown which has made the pieces look quite a lot better.

It is a pity about the LEDs because the actual board is very attractive and a lovely size and I have had no problems with it whatsoever.

Hi Bryan,

I also have the exact same problem with the lights.

Solved it by turning the board and ignoring the coordinates.

This way either black or white can be played from the bottom. Although it is not
working with the Chessnut android app, works perfectly Aart's Chess for Android
and Chess Dojo by Gerhard.

For windows Lucas Chess recognizes either starting position perfectly. Thanks to Graham's driver.

I did not try this online since I have no interest playing online.

Hello to you also Greg.

The Chessnut air board is least problematic one compare to its competition none of which
have true piece recognition.

One class above is of course the Certabo and Millennium boards while they are too expensive,
in my eyes not perfect products either.

All the Best

Murat

Hi Murat

Many thanks for the hint, I will try it tonight that way.
I suppose it is because of playing all those years with chess computers with the LEDs at the front of the squares.

As for Certabo, there is a surprise coming very soon.

Bryan
