eOne - The online board from Millennium

Post by Mythbuster »

Hi everyone,
I wonder, that here is no thread about the new eBoard from Millennium. Some infos are at our community, also the datasheet in english as PDF Download: https://www.schachcomputer.info/forum/portal.php

The text info:

Play chess online with real board and pieces

The MILLENNIUM eONE is an electronic chess board specially
designed for players who like to play online chess, and who want
to get back the real, authentic game feeling.Moves are entered
comfortably on the electronic sensor board with real pieces.
The moves are transmitted in real time via Bluetooth or USB to
compatible apps, online platforms or chess programs. The op-
ponent‘s move is displayed directly on the board using 81 LEDs
(4 per board).

Advantages:

▶ A natural, authentic feel of the game
▶ Enjoyment of the game without distractions
▶ No long screen times
▶ Full concentration on your game

„Designed in Munich“

The board design was developed in Munich, including the uni-
que & modern chess pieces. These are classically elegant and
stylish at the same time and combine tradition and modernity.
The pieces are weighted at the base with anti-slip underside. The
slim, ergonomic shape ensures a good grip and excellent board
overview.

Perfect size for always and everywhere

The eONE measures 12.2 x 12.2 inches and has a very flat de-
sign with 0.97 inches. The board weighs 932g and is so-
lidly built. It fits in any pocket and is very easy to clean.
The king height is 2.17 inches and the square size is 1.18 x 1.18 inches.

Set up, turn on, start playing

The eONE has everything needed to play directly integrated:
Bluetooth and USB data transfer, the sensor technology to de-
tect the moves and, of course, a powerful lithium battery that
provides energy for at least 18 hours of play.
So set up, switch on, start playing, without any cables! eONE
is ready to play within seconds. The USB Type C interface is
used to charge the battery, install updates, but also to con-
nect the eONE to Windows PCs or MACs. Thus, applications
without Bluetooth support can also use the board via USB.
When switching on, the battery indicator briefly shows the cur-
rent capacity of the battery. And if the battery should eventually
run out after several years, you can open your board and simply
replace the battery.

Play Online

With eONE you can play against millions of other chess players
around the world, using the largest chess platforms. Once an
opponent has been found and the game has started, you can
put your phone or tablet aside and concentrate on the game at
the board. It doesn‘t matter whether the opponent is playing via
web client, app or also on an eBoard!

Lichess.org

Connect the eONE via Bluetooth to the MILLENNIUM ChessLink
app and play rated or unrated games on Lichess f rom as litt-
le as 3 minutes against f riends, or f rom 5 minutes + 5 seconds
bonus per move against opponents f rom all over the world.
The MILLENNIUM ChessLink app is available f ree of
charge for Android and iOS. It covers all the functions
that are essential for playing with the board, is intuiti-
ve to use and can be used without the board if necessary.
The latest version of the ChessLink app not only lets you play
against millions of opponents, you now also have access to your
Lichess f riends list and can instantly see who is currently online.
Challenge your f riends to a game! Or play against the Stock-
fish engine at your desired skill level to improve your game. The
app also supports mutually agreed move takebacks and victory
claims if your opponent unexpectedly leaves the game.

chess.com

With the Android version of the chess.com app you can also use
the eONE to play against other chess.com users. The time modes
are f reely selectable, there are no restrictions for board players.

Tornelo.com

Tornelo is the benchmark for all serious tournaments: Everyone
feels comfortable here, whether organizer, arbiter or player. De-
signed as an all-round caref ree package including player pairing
draw, broadcasting and correction options for arbiters, the plat-
form comes into play especially for serious sports events. Even if
tournament-sized boards are normally used here - the eONE is
compatible. Maybe try it out at the next club night?
Countless other applications available

For the ChessLink compatible devices there are countless other
chess programs available, with which you can also use the eONE:

▶ For example, HIARCS Chess Explorer for Mac and PC - an
extremely powerful chess program that can also integrate
UCI engines, among other things, and serves as a training
and analysis tool for many top players.
▶ Or Hiarcs for iOS (iPhone and iPad), if you want to use a
powerful chess engine on your mobile device.
▶ For Android devices, we recommend the powerful, f ree
app „Chess for Android“, which, in addition to various
engines, also enables online play via the FICS and ICC
servers, for example.
▶ You can also use chess programs such as BearChess,
Arena, LucasChess or Shredder via various community
projects.
▶ The ChessLink protocol is increasingly integrated by many
programmers in their software products. The number of
compatible programs and platforms will therefore cons-
tantly increase!

Technical data:

▶ 81 LEDs for move indication on the board
▶ Automatic move detection
▶ Dimensions board 12.2 x 12.2 x 0.97 inches
▶ Weight board approx. 932 grams
▶ Weight piece set approx. 220 grams

Hi Sascha,

Thanks for sharing.

This is interesting, as I thought Millennium was against the concept of a board with an internal battery (for shipping concerns), based on previous HIARCS posts?

While it is good to see the move towards an integrated board (without the external ChessLink or ChessVolt required), it doesn't appear this board will take advance of the CGE RFID pieces (again, disappointing to those of us who have invested in multiple Millennium auto sensory boards).

Still waiting for the dedicated computer that has integrated engines (for offline play), auto sensory pieces, and connectivity to play online with all the major sites with integrated utilizing LED move indication.

It seems like there would be a market for this?

eONE regards,
Greg

I’ve had my eye on a DGT Pegasus, but this Millennium board sounds interesting too. I can’t tell for sure, but it seems as if the Pegasus can only be used to play online on selected websites, whereas the eOne can also be used with other programs such as HIARCS, so that’s a selling point for Millennium. The only thing I’m hesitant about is the size. I like the idea of a compact board, but the eOne is pushing the lower size limit for me. I’m going to hold off until I can see an independent review video to get a better feel for the size.

I’m getting the tourney 55 for Christmas. DGT was considered but it didnt help that it seemed to derp several times during the WCC match. When castling is interpreted as Kf1 on chess’s world’s biggest stage, it gives me pause. Millennium apparently hosted an online hybrid tourney using these boards and they claim it went off without a hitch.

Also the White Pawn app developer made mention in his comments that the Millennium boards were better than DGT for “everyday use.” Not sure what that meant since I can’t imagine that DGT would be better in a “once in awhile” use.

I also looked at Certabo boards, but their own demo seemed to suggest a really long lag time between a move and recognition. That would be really annoying.

SquareOff Pro with the rollup board seems promising but I wanted the large, tourney sized board that looks beautiful. As far as their other products, I don’t think the self moving technology is quite there yet. If it were to get to the point where it makes the fake Regium demos real, playing blitz as a hybrid environment would be exciting.

The one downside is that I use Chessbase Fritz for long play and it doesnt support Millennium. Hence, i will be switching to Hiarcs. i am gratified that Hiarcs Explorer 2.0 is coming out, because I really thought that this software was no longer being supported due to the outdated website and the really old articles. They were bragging about things that happened ten years ago. That’s like 100 in techno years. They really need to clean that up at some point, because it was nearly a disqualifier.

Anyway I look forward to trying this out with Hiarcs. I’ll let you all know if you’re at all interested.

Could you please advise which Certabo video you watched that didn't impress you as I have never had that trouble.
Are we talking about online play?

Hi

Yes you are correct. Unfortunately there isn't a video showing the latest software updated version for the Pi and I have just tested it on mine (I usually play with the PC version) and it moves instantly which is good news for Certabo Pi users.

I know that this isn't relevant to you now and I hope that your new Millennium board will be all you wished for.

During the last few months I played hundreds of test games on e-One prototypes, both on lichess.org and chess.com. Most of the time I'm usually playing 7/5 rapid games, but also 5/5 games are no problem due to the speedy reaction time of the new sensor board with its 81 LEDs. As a matter of fact, I’m very happy with the comfortable use of the board.
In my opinion no other eBoard is currently supporting such variety of chess applications:

• Sensor chess board with automatic move detection and 81 LEDs
• Built-in Lithium battery (for 18 hours long battery life), Bluetooth and USB-C interface
• Compatible with all ChessLink chess applications (Android & iOS):
  • o Play online on Lichess.org with ChessLink App or WhitePawn
o Play online on Chess.com with the Chess.com App
o Play online on Tornelo.com (with Windows PC)
o Hiarcs Chess Explorer (on Windows & Mac)
o Hiarcs Chess Explorer (on iOS)
o Chess for Android (on Android)
o LucasChess (now also on Windows with Bluetooth), Arena, and various more community projects
• Perfect size (31 x 31 cm) for traveling or playing outside, fits in a briefcase or backpack

Looking at all its exciting features and excellent value for money performance, I have no doubt that the new Millennium e-One will become world’s best-selling electronic chess product in 2022.

Best regards from Munich & Seasonal Greetings

Having build in chesslink is a huge bonus.

Too bad it has tons of wasted real estate on the sides.

A much more important bonus is the fact that the Millennium e-One is perfectly working on Android and iOS devices and on all relevant platforms (lichess.org, chess.com, Tornelo).
Its internal battery is specified for 18 hours of play, which is quite a lot of rapid games :D
No problems with rated or unrated games, no interruptions, no trouble at all.
Sometimes it's wise to wait a little longer ....

By the way: Millennium is offering electronic boards in different sizes for every taste:
• The compact e-One (31 x 31 cm) for home and mobil use as well as in high schools
• The King Performance (40 x 40 cm)
• The Exclusive (40 x 40 cm) with piece recognition
• The Supreme Tournament (55 x 55 cm) with piece recognition

It is not clear if the board has chesslink build in. If the board needs the chesslink app for connection
for example to Lucas Chess then internet connection may also be required.

I am considering this board to play against engines in Shredder, Lucas Chess etc. offline.

Hopefully we will get complete reviews soon.

Hi Murat,

The board does have the ChessLink built in, which works the same as the external ChessLink box for the other boards. So you can use USB or BT or BLE connections without needing to buy anything else.

It has also been tested with my driver in Shredder and LucasChess (but not by me, as I don't have one!) and seems to work fine. I'm currently working on getting it to accept special starting positions. Since it doesn't have piece recognition it needs to be told where the pieces are, while the other boards can tell my driver where they are.

Thank you very much Graham.

On the product page they advertise free chesslink app so that's what confused me.
I guess the app is for online play only.

Cheers
