This is the last game of Rebel in this tournament so i want to thanks Paul for letting me in even though Rebel 5 was over the rating. I also want to thanks all the participants for that. As you can see none of the game were easy even Rebel 5 lost this last game and with Novag Beluga that showed it is a strong opponent at this rating. So 10.5 out of 15 for Mysticum Mephisto Rebel 5.0

Hi all,

This result means that the Steinitz Encore can get equal points if it wins its last game against the Mephisto MM II, although the Rebell 5.0 may still come first, based on SB points.
But that we can be sure of only if all games are played out.
I have heard nothing of Al lately, he also did not respond to or read the PM I sent him.
So I am inclined to play the last MM II games myself.

It was interesting, although it felt like a really bad game for the Turbostar (and the Designer was extremely accurate in it's play), according to Stockfish the TS only made one blunder, an overly aggressive knight advance on move 11. After that it was defending a lost position. So all credit to the Designer for punishing that one mistake.

It's been fun getting to watch a machine's performance much more closely than I usually would. In closed, positional games the TS was actually quite impressive (nearly getting a draw against the Rebell for example), but it's tendency to play aggressive openings often got it in to trouble. Perhaps having the 'Kasparov' openings module was in fact a disadvantage - there's no point in opening like Kasparov if you then don't have the tactical ability to deal with the consequences, and it just wasn't as good tactically as many of the other contestants. Also it would often respond immediately to opponents moves it had anticipated, whereas I noticed that other machines seemed to use the full 30s every time, perhaps updating their evaluations once a move had actually been played.

As my first tournament, I very much enjoyed it, chatting to folk as we played, and discussing these fascinating old machines. Thank you to everyone's help and patience as I got up to speed with things. Having just bought a Star Diamond from Jürgen (winging it's way from Germany as we speak), I'd be very happy to try it out in an Below 2200 tournament, but perhaps you've had one of those in the fairly recent past. I know there was a under 1700 one recently, but I'm not sure what other rating band tournaments have been played here before.
