3.1 Mephisto MMII + HG240 - Fid. Designer Display 1-0 (https://lichess.org/hL4NlSqr)
It was an exciting game with a very sharp opening, white had 12 bookmoves and black even 17!?
After that they both played well, and it should have been a draw, but then black played 52... Kh7?? instead of Kxg7, and then it was over.
At 54.Qf6 white announced mate-in-5.

7.3: SciSys Stratos B - Mephisto MMII + HG240 1/2-1/2
It was a hard game, first white had advantage, later black got material advantage, but the endgame with only queens and pawns was too much for its capabilities, so it ended in a hard fought draw.

Thanks Paul. That's a very impressive performance from the Novag Beluga. I'll have to keep an eye out for one of them on ebay, it would be interesting to pit it against one of the stronger Novags to see how it fairs in a longer match. I've just picked up a Super Nova which might make an interesting adversary for it.

Hi Paul
once again a masterful handling by you of these very popular
tournaments

one question....
i notice the winner will be the Rebel 5.0 which has an active elo higher then the 1850 limit
so i am wondering how that works?
excuse me if this has been discussed before but i am just curious..

Best Regards
Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanx for your appreciation :-)
And yes, the Rebell 5.0 is in fact too strong, but I made an exception for Ricardo because I liked to let him play with us in the tournament, and he had no other comp to fit in the tournament.

It is not always about winning, but it is always to have fun regards,
Paul

So the last game of this tournament is played.
8.2: Mephisto MMII + HG240 - Steinitz Encore 20 MHz 1-0, see https://lichess.org/L1QN29R4

MM II played an unusual opening, Steinitz at move two out of book, MM II at move 4. Turned out to be "Nimzowitsch Defense: French Connection".
MM II mishandled its position, and soon its king was trapped in the middle, and it was only a question of time that Steinitz blew up white's defense.
[Event "Casual Correspondence game"]
[Site "https://lichess.org/L1QN29R4"]
[Date "2021.07.08"]
[White "Mephisto MM II + HG240"]
[Black "Chafitz Steinitz Encore 20 MHz"]
[Result "0-1"]
[UTCDate "2021.07.08"]
[UTCTime "18:00:46"]
[Variant "Standard"]
[TimeControl "-"]
[ECO "B00"]
[Opening "Nimzowitsch Defense: French Connection"]
[Termination "Normal"]

1. e4 e6 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. d4 Bb4 4. Ne2 Nf6 5. Bg5 h6 6. Bxf6 Qxf6 7. e5 Qh4 8. Qd2 d5 9. exd6 Bxd6 10. Nb5 Bd7 11. Nxd6+ cxd6 12. c4 O-O 13. d5 exd5 14. cxd5 Ne5 15. Nc3 Nc4 16. Bxc4 Qxc4 17. Nd1 Rac8 18. Ne3 Rfe8 19. b3 Qb5 20. Rb1 Bf5 21. a4 Qb6 22. Rb2 Bd3 23. Rg1 Qd4 24. Kd1 Qe5 25. Re1 Bh7 26. h3 Bd3 27. f4 Qe4 28. Ra2 Qd4 29. b4 Rc3 30. Rb2 Ra3 31. Rb1 Rc8 32. a5 Ra1 33. Nc2 Rxb1+ 34. Qc1 Rxc1+ 35. Kxc1 Rxc2+ 36. Kd1 Be4# 0-1
So Steinitz ends with 10,5 out of 15, great score, and together with the Rebell 5.0 at the top of the bill ;-)
Rebell has the better SB-score, but as it has a too high elo for this tournament I think they should share the first price.
Unfortunately Miss Tournament refuses to kiss the winners, she's afraid of getting Corona... :-P

Hi Phil,

Thanx for joining this tournament!
The Beluga is some kind of a dark horse, not much known about it. It performed surprisingly well this tournament.
But I'm afraid that it is not strong enough to compete with the Super Nova, rated 1885 active elo.
Super Nova has a 32kb program vs Beluga 16kb,
opening library 15.000 ply vs Beluga 3000 ply.
The Super Nova looks like an interesting machine, and I wonder if and how it relates to the Novag Emerald.

Btw: I am thinking about a next tournament where I can enter my Fidelity Chesster Challenger (about 1885 active elo as well).
That would be for example a Under 1920 or Under 1930 elo.
You could enter your Super Nova there, would be interesting to see how it performs!
Maybe somewhere after summer, or as the next Halloween or Christmas tournament ;-).

Best regards,
Paul

That sounds great, I look forward to it. Can we make it 1930 - I have a Novag Zircon I'd love to bring to the party. It would be nice to be one of the higher rated entries next time!

Thanks for organising it.

All the best

Sounds good Paul. The highest rated computer I have under 1930 is the Novag Constellation Expert (1892).

Yes, maybe I should lower it to Up to 1923, as there are a number of strong 1930 elo competitors which would limit the chances for participants entering a below 1900 computer.
And that could motivate Phil to enter his Super Nova.
Or should we just stick to Under 1900?!
Then Ricardo also has a fair chance with his Rebell 5.0.

Btw: I hope you have collected all the game pgn's again?
I would like to receive them again :-)

Now that's an interesting thought, I wonder if I could write a lichess shim/client so that the Super Nova could play directly online via the serial interface. I see there's a python api for Lichess: https://github.com/rhgrant10/berserk. Something to think about over the summer.
