Congratulations to the Hiarcs team for participating and winning the tournament in this convincing way. Having seen quite a few games between Hiarcs and the Baron over the years, I was hoping for another draw. But anyone who looked at the game will agree that this time there wasn't a shred of a chan...

The Baron at the WCRCC

In the weekend the Baron was participating in the World Computer Rapid Chess Championship (WCRCC) organised by Charles Roberson. This year only 12 participants were prepared to spend their weekend on this tournament and as a consequence many of the stronger programs were missing. With a maximum of 1...

Re: Vishy on Computers

It is quite long but very interesting. Thanks for posting this. Truly fascinating Is it really true (as Vishy ~mentions) that top chess engines fundamentally changed how they evaluate positions from about 2006 onwards? (By no longer assigning values to pieces - but letting the program work it out o...

Of course it is not the board that decides about stopping. What I meant is that they are going to suggest this. And I see no reason why the members would think otherwise. Most members are enjoying a well deserved pension and they are not very active. I don't see them forming a new board. Unless you...

No, a meeting where the CSVN as we know it now will stop. Unless of course enough programmers will enter next tournament. I suggest you read article 14 of the CSVN statutes. It is the members that decide to liquidate, not the board (and if the board consists of 4 elected members, as the agenda of t...

The board had a real struggle to have enough programs for the tournament last may. If programmers don't want to participate anymore, then the magazine is also losing one of its pillars. In november they will try once more to organize it. If the respons is again as bad as, or lower than in may, the ...

Peter, you're sending mixed messages. First you say Rybka is welcome and received an invitation, then you say it is only welcome if the majority of the registered participants supports that decision. When and in what way are you planning to take that vote? I will certainly vote against the participa...

Any word on the bizarre loss of Pandix to The Baron in round 7? Was it a crash, bug, book corruption, transcription mistake, or fingerfehler? According to Gyula the move should not have been played and was certainly not entered into the book. He figured it may have been a strange transposition bug ...

Warning to programmers

Someone posing as Erdogan Gunes has sent me a mail from the hotmail account 'chessbase@hotmail.com'. As I smelled a rat I verified with Erdo whether he sent me this mail. He did not and asked me to warn other programmers for this scam.

Re: An Open Letter to Cock de Gorter and the CSVN Board

Harvey, I think your objective is backwards. Rather than request a retraction of your ban, you and others should boycott Dutch Computer Chess Association until Cock de Gorter resigns. This is a clear case of abuse of power. I wish you the best. Mike Thanks Mike, We will certainly do all in our powe...

About your tournaments, I remember you announcing the first one. How did they turn out? How many authors showed up? I hope that they were successful! There have been three editions already and it seems that it fulfills a need. Some people that have not attended CSVN or other tournaments (or stopped...

Hi Mike, I'm not visiting the talkchess forum anymore (at least not frequently) so I probably missed your announcement because of that. Otherwise your announcement would have provoked a response from me earlier. As you may know I'm organising a tournament in spring 2011 for the fourth time with simi...

Chess Programmer's Tournament 2011

Upon many requests I'm organising the Chess Programmer's Tournament again. The dates are set at March 26-27. I did not update my website yet, but will do so the coming days. The Setup of the tournament and the location will be the same as last year. I do not have the 2011 prizes of the location yet,...
