Re: Colossus X

Hi Fernando, here is the result of a tournament under real DOS at full speed (two 2.0 GHz Pentium M notebooks) and 30 sec/move average, where Colossus reached around 2 million nodes/s: MC5 Gid CG3 WCh Soc MC1 CST Fr2 Rex Psi Col CPl Tur 1. M-Chess Pro 5.0 * 2.0 2.5 2.5 4.0 3.0 3.0 3.5 2.5 4.0 3.5 3....

Re: What was the best/strongest Motorola 68000 program ?

When comparing the 6502 to the 68000, it's important to note that the 6502 is significantly faster at the same clock speed. A good comparison is the n-queens problem written in assembly language, which can be found on this page: https://www.hpmuseum.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/hpmuseum/articles.cgi?read=700...

Re: Chessmaster 2000 running in Quemu

Maybe it's still too fast. If so, it would help to slow down the DOS emulation. I've no problems on a 80188 @ 8.0 MHz.

Re: Chessmaster 2000 running in Quemu

I think the reason is the higher emulation speed compared to DOSBox. Under real DOS CM2000/2100 crashes too, if the CPU is fast enough,
You can see in the analysis window, that the calculation shows abnormal moves und scores.

Re: 1 ply search experiment vs human opponents

Due to the unexpected high result of both programs, I compared the Lichess ratings of some top classical players with their FIDE rating and it turns out that the FIDE rating is around 300 Elo lower. So we have aound 2150 FIDE Elo for the CP2150 after 300 games and around 1650 Elo for the handicapped...

Re: 1 ply search experiment vs human opponents

@Murat: The Chess Player 2150 reached 2450 ELO at full strength, that means: - 3.3 GHz real DOS (not emulated) - Book on - Ponder on - Up to 7 plies in the middle game (only 2 plies on a 8086) - Up to 10 plies in the end game (10 plies is the maximum of the CP2150) - 30 min + 10 sec increment for th...

1 ply search experiment vs human opponents

We are usually interested in the highest possible playing strength, on a specific hardware. A few year ago I've made some experiments with the pretty weak DOS program CP2150 on Lichess at 3.3 GHz (200 times faster than a 80486 @ 33 MHz) with 30 min and after 300 games it reached around 2450 ELO with...

Re: A Very Old Question I Forgot the Answer....

How strong is Chessmaster 2100 running in current computers? I've tested many DOS programs under real DOS (not emulated) at 3.3 GHz that means around 200 times faster, than a 80486 @ 33 MHz. Unfortunately some oldies have difficulties at this speed. The CM2100 doesn't run stable and for this reason...

Any idea where I could find them ? Are there other model that you are aware of too ? I guess it's difficult to find them even on ebay, but it's worth a try. I bought both many years ago, but they are not in my possession anymore. The pictures are googled however.

Sorry Fern, I've no Win95 installed to test, but I noticed different behaviour for the programs if startet under WinXP and some problems
compared to real DOS. I think the plain DOS mode of Win95 should work for the most programs without speed disadvantage.

I estimate that real DOS (not emulated DOS) allows the old programs to go 2 plies deeper compared to the maximum speed of D-Fend, that means a significantly stronger play. All the 32-bit programs (for the 80386 and above) I've tested worked flawlessly, but some the the older 16-bit programs (for the...

Executing Colossus X under real DOS @ 3.3 GHz is no problem, but unfortunately Cyrus doesn't start at this speed anymore.
The DOS Chessmasters 2000/2100/3000 have the same problem. The emulators are very slow in comparison to real DOS.

In this article about the Chess Champion 2175 PC, Thorsten suspected that a B-program should gain better compared to the AB-programs on higher speed. 1992 CC2175 had no chance to win versus M-Chess 1.70 on a 486 @ 33 MHz, so let's see, what happends at much higher speed: 3.3 GHz real DOS 30 sec/move...
