EDIT: OK, I see now that it's possible to mate in five no matter which black reply is made in move 2. :-)

A-ha! I didn't think of that move... Greg Greetings, Greg. I'm glad you enjoyed this 151 year-old puz...

Interesting puzzle from 1864 Illustrated London News

I happened across this chess puzzle from the 1864 Illustrated London News and it has one of the most interesting solutions I've seen. White to move, mate in three. I must admit that I could not find the solution, and after a few minutes consulted Stockfish. Perhaps most of you will not be as challen...

Well, at least he's not quite as bad as this guy selling an Ivan who somehow thinks it's a Radio Snack 1650L Plus reading his "terms and conditions" hurts my eyes and brain! Probably contributing to why his "1650L" has been relisted 3 times now with no apparent interest. He seem...

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad to hear it's not just mine. I don't own any zinc-carbon batteries, but I've tried alkaline and rechargeables of various brands. Both are ever so slightly too long. I think I may select a set of good rechargeable batteries (eg. ENELOOP ) and grind a small amount from ...

Have batteries increased in size?

I have a slight problem with one of my chess computers, the Radio Shack 1650 Fast Response (equivalent to the SciSys Concord, if I am not mistaken) which I purchased when I worked for Radio Shack in the 1980s. It is the only set I own that accepts 4 AA batteries in a single row (as opposed to 2+2 or...
