I have this issue as well. When I last installed Windows HIARCS worked fine until I installed more programs then this problem occurred. I suspect Microsoft Office or Adobe Creative Cloud were involved. I shall clean install Windows soon and do more tests to try narrow down the cause. The crash dumps...

There are options for removing variations and annotations in the "Edit > Remove" menu. "Everything except main line" will remove all comments, variations and symbols .

In Windows they are stored in the registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HIARCS\HiarcsChessExplorer\Recent) so you can edit that if you know what you are doing.

These instructions from a post by Mark explain how:

1. go to the end of the game
2. enter moves to continue game
3. go back to move before last move in actual game
4. press shift and enter last move

Then game will have variation including last move of game.

The link works for me in the PC version of Chess Explorer. What does the error message say?
